ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to assess the spatio-temporal variation of the Dhaleshwari River water during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, and its effects on benthic macro-invertebrates. The study revealed that the mean temperature and DO concentration were decreased, while the mean pH and BOD were increased in the post-monsoon season. The low mean transparency was found due to high TDS content, and EC was within the standard limit in both seasons. The EC increased with increasing TDS content. The mean ionic concentrations of NO3-, NO2-, and NH4+ were found to be 2.8, 1.0, and 1.0 mg/L, respectively, in the monsoon season and 2.0, 0.5, and 1.2 mg/L, respectively, in the post-monsoon season. The river experienced lower DO concentration with higher NH4+ concentration in the post-monsoon season, which could be due to agricultural practices near riverbanks. A total of 7 macroinvertebrate species were found in the Dhaleshwari River. Among them, 5 species are mollusks, namely Thiara scabra, Pila globosa, Brotia costula, Lamellidens marginalis, Corbicula fluminea, and 2 species are arthropods, namely Cybister fimbriolatus and Lamprima aurata, and their abundance was much higher in almost all stations under study. The macroinvertebrates play an important role in the river ecosystem's balance. The overall study presents that the Dhaleshwari River is a rich habitat of benthic macro-invertebrates, and the water quality parameters of the river are within standard limits, indicating suitability for aquatic organisms.
