ABSTRACT

Recent energy price volatility and increasing dependence on imported fossil fuels have raised concerns about the macroeconomic vulnerability of energy-importing countries, highlighting the need to explore alternative domestic energy sources within the transport sector. This study examines the relationship between biomethane usage in Italy’s transport sector and economic growth, using quarterly data. The analysis uses an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to find both long-term and short-term connections. The results show a steady long-term link between biomethane production and real GDP. The data suggest that more use of biomethane is connected to moderate but meaningful changes in economic activity. In the short term, these changes are mostly due to investment, and the system returns to balance quickly. A causality test using the Toda–Yamamoto method shows that biomethane can help predict economic activity. Still, these findings should be viewed carefully, since they do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. In summary, the findings suggest that biomethane could be important for the link between energy and the economy, especially in transport. It may also help lower the risk from changes in global energy prices.
