Environmental law has struggled long with concerns of public non-participation, inefficient enforcement, and compliance mechanisms. The paper suggests the use of gamification as a tool for public engagement. It is based on the core idea that engagement with a subject matter can be significantly increased when it is presented through interactive, game-like experiences. When this is applied to environmental law, something that is often met with challenges because of its complex and abstract language and ineffective enforcement mechanisms, it is able to create an immersive learning and compliance experience that is equally impactful and memorable. Reflecting on psychological theories such as Self-Determination Theory, the Theory of Planned Behaviour, Goal Framing Theory, Octalysis framework, Behavioural economics, and social cognitive theory, the paper explains how gamification fosters autonomy, competence, social influence, and intrinsic motivation, which are all vital for sustained behavioural change that becomes quintessential for successful environmental regulation models. By leveraging technology, behavioural insights, and game theory, gamification fosters a culture of environmental governance, empowering individuals and institutions to become active participants in sustainability. Gamification increases the possibility of voluntary complying in line with environmental regulations by strategic enhancement of legal framework and duties. The paper, thus, argues for a paradigm shift in how environmental legal frameworks are researched, taught, communicated, and implemented, leveraging gamification as a strategic and transformative tool in green governance.
